Microsoft Access stops responding on HP machines with Digital Persona Biometric device

In Microsoft Access 2007 or Microsoft Access 2010 when you attempt to perform any one of the following actions on a Hewlett-Packard computer, Microsoft Access stops responding:

  • Open a database that has a startup form.
  • Import a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
  • Open tables in Datasheet View. In this case, the first value in the first record of the table may appear but the rest of the datasheet appears as blank white space. It may take several minutes for all the table’s contents to appear.

The issue occurs on Hewlett-Packard computers on which HP ProtectTools Security Manager is installed and features Digital Persona’s Biometric Authentication Service, a fingerprint reader, or any other biometric device.

HP eliteBook 8440p

Solution:

Method 1

Download the most recent version of the Hewlett-Packard HP ProtectTools Security Manager from Hewlett Packard’s site.

HP ProtectTools Security Manager 5.1.0.736 (16 Aug 2010) download link

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&swItem=ob-87391-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Method 2 (suggest use this one)

Open Microsoft Access as Administrator.

You can run Microsoft Access as Administator with elevated priviliges each time you open Access by doing the following:

1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to msaccess.exe in either of the following locations:

          C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

          C:\Program Files (X86)\Microsoft Office\Office14

If you experience the problem in Microsoft Access 2007, msaccess.exe will be in the Office12, rather than the Office14 folder.

2. Right click on msaccess.exe

3. Click "Run as adminstrator"

You can configure Microsoft Access to always run as administrator by doing the following:

1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to msaccess.exe in either:

         C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

         C:\Program Files (X86)\Microsoft Office\Office14

2. Right click msaccess.exe

3. Select Properties

4. Select the Compatibility tab.

5. Check "Run this program as an administrator" in the Priviliege Level section.

Note: You must be logged into the computer as a member of the local administrators group to perform this operation. When you restart Microsoft Access, you will receive the following prompt by User Account Control: "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer? Program: Microsoft Access…"

Method 3

Open the Access table first in Design View, then switch to Datasheet View.

if want to use outlook 2007 access online achieve mailbox in exchange 2010, you need to use outlook 2007 with sp2 and install 2 hotfixs.

hotfix list:

2010 December Cumulative update
(KB 2479671)

2011 February Public Update
(KB 2500894)

outlook autodiscover on exchange 2003

Symptom:

Customer environment is exchange 2003 sp2. they found such issue:

outlook 2007 can use autodiscover connnect exchange 2003 in exchange mode.

outlook 2010 can not use autodiscover connect exchange 2003 in exchange mode. Manually is ok.

Research:

1-http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff728623(EXCHG.141).aspx

outlook 2010 do not support exchange 2003

2-http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee620554.aspx

Exchange Server 2003 is the earliest version of Exchange Server that can be used with Outlook 2010.

3-http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178957.aspx

The Junk E-mail Filter is provided for a subset of Outlook 2010 account types. The types are listed in the following section, Supported account types. The filter works best when it is used with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and later versions. Note that Exchange Server 2003 is the earliest version of Exchange Server that can be used with Outlook 2010.

4-more

this is a known issue.

workaround:

manually create Outlook profile (and not use the account auto setup process)

Personal Folders Backup for Outlook

How to automaticly backup PST files in Outlook is an big issue for Mailbox quota is not so large like Microsoft’s 5GB or hotmial’s 25GB. Personal Folders Backup for Outlook is an add-on from Microsoft. I suggest this because you can use it for free.
